Spier My Way

I was first introduced to Spier by my mother when I was younger, although she had never been on the farm, it was her favourite winery.  We took a trip to Cape Town and drove through Stellenbosch and she pointed it out to me: ‘Spier! That’s my favourite wine brand.”, I fondly remember her saying to me. It’s crazy how the universe works, who knew that about 10 years later I would be reintroduced to the brand at a welcome dinner that was hosted on the Spier farm during my #Stellenblog experience.

Wine has always played a vital role in my life, from seeing my mother and aunts enjoy a glass after a long day of cooking and me sneakily tasting the last drops at the bottom of the glasses left in the kitchen and hating the taste, to  going out to find the cheapest bottle of Pinotage to enjoy with my varsity housemate over tears and chats about boys who have broken our hearts.

I definitely would not call myself a wine connoisseur, I do still need assistance when picking up a bottle to pair with my meals. I have enjoyed the finest wines that South Africa has to offer to the dirt cheap kind that gets you tipsy and feeling sick the next morning from only one glass and really enjoyed that too! For the longest time I would be utterly embarrassed at how my cousins pop a couple of ice cubes in their red wine. It used to make me cringe! I believe that wine, like anything else, is best enjoyed the way YOU like it so I won’t be giving you a list of ‘Do’s & Dont’s’ on how to enjoy your fav red. My current journey with Spier has helped me come to the realisation that how you drink and enjoy your wine should be preferential.

So grab your wine glass by the bowl and not the stem, drink your red wine chilled and not room temperature, fill your glass to the brim, and enjoy YOUR wine, YOUR way!

On that note of enjoying your wine, your way. I am giving away 2 x cases of wine! Wooop! To stand a chance to win, share your unique stories of how you enjoy your wine your way and you could be one of two lucky winners. Leave your story in my comment section to below!

Good Luck!

XO

    Hi Twiggy, great post.

How I enjoy my wine my way, after any long or short day i make sure i grab a glass of wine. When with friends we’d always start of with a good bottle of wine red or white we on it, hours later we still at it on broke days we grab a box of wine. I was introduced to wine by my friend I have then been a true lover of wine.

I like to have it on a social gathering with friends and family over a BBQ provided its sweet, actually this brings back last year’s memories around this time when we had it on a cosy setup outdoor with a bit of fire to warm us

Hey Twiggy. I spend a lot of my time reading books, and I do enjoy the company of a good wine on some evenings when I’m reading. Wine also goes a long way during book club review sessions. I’m a ‘books and wine’ girl. I love Spier wine. I have two bottles in the house right now – red and white.

I aswell got my wine loving habits from my father . My unique way of drinking it would be room temperature with a bottle of cold water of the side . Taking sips of the room temp wine and swirling the cold water soon after . Magical.

I love wine with pasta like most people do but when I’m stress and need to chill out I mix it…ice cream lol. Best combo it’s become a tradition for me and my sister.

I’ve never taken a strong liking to red wine before until I discovered Shiraz. I love it for its sweet undertone, it’s like a burst of different flavours in my mouth, and I have a ridiculous sweet tooth so yay 💃🏾. I enjoy it with vanilla ice cream on a night in for an extra kick of sweetness or a creamy pasta, preferably one with pesto too for a contrast in flavours.

I’m actually screaming cause I really enjoy wine especially Spier! My unique (but embarrassing) story was when I spent New Years alone at home and decided to open one of my dads bottles and had planned to fill it up with water after. I literally thought I’d have a glass or two, get rid of the smell and pretend like nothing happened when everyone got back. An hour later I’m passed out on my bed with an empty wine bottle next to my study desk and that’s literally what my parents walked into. 😩 A mess! I’ve committed myself into pacing every drinking experience when it comes to wine and to handle it with class since. 😅

There are a million ways I enjoy my wine, specifically white wine (Chardonnay/Chenin blanc). I normally indulge after a long week of submissions and tests on my own or with my partner indoors with Chinese food, a bowl of popcorn and movies. On most occasions it’s over girl chat during lunch dates with my girls. It’s great for picnics too!

I truly enjoy my white wine chilled, in the biggest Olivia Pope wine glass I can find with a good meal. 🙌🏽

My first experience with wine was back in varsity trying new things and trying to be porsh. Which lead to the why I like having my wine till today. I drink my wine from a mug whenever I’m home, even though I have wine glasses, I mean those are for guests..ME JUST STRAIGHT FROM MUG😎

Wine is something I take personally as well. My tastes have definitely developed over time from cheap, and bad hangovers. To a good quality bottle of wine here and there to really enjoy and end a tiring day. I have yet to have the pleasure to go to a particular winery farm but I’m patient, since good things come to those who wait.

Growing up wine was never really my drink of choice and looking back I realize that my palate wasn’t matured enough.

I remember one of my first encounter was when my older sister had her varsity friends over (girls night I suppose) with the deepest, reddest (is that a real word?) wine I had ever seen. I was so fascinated how 1 bottle of deep red liquid could make people so happy.

Fast forward, I took a massive stolen gulp (thinking it would make me as happy) and spat the entire thing out wondering how this bitter stuff could make ANYONE so happy. I never touched any sort of wine for a while, a really long time!

Eventually my best friend insisted “I grow up and develop a more matured palate”. I figured it would be less embarrassing if I tried it with her and I loved it!

The difference is, it was such an EXPERIENCE (the one my sister and friends had). It was no longer just a pretty looking yuggy liquid, it was the experience! I loved (still do) the way it made me FEEL.

I love trying new wines. Its become SUCH an important part of my adult life (I really need to emphasize this)

I love my wine with absolutely everything! It makes me feel so grown up!! I cant explain it.

You know Twiggy I have really grown into my journey of wine. I user to be a spirit cooler type of girl until I attended the FNB wine show one type and I fell in love with red wine. The way I love my wine is when it is red! I call it Burgundy! Room Temperature! My mom hates it when I drink in front of her so I always keep a secret bottle of Burgundy in my room for when I’ve have a loooong week and I just want to WINED down (see what I did there!) with lots of biltong and music. I also have a secret wine glass quirk where I’m obsessed with oversized res wine glasses!

BTW! I have just recently discovered a love for Pinotage! I started drinking wine around people who only drank Merlot and Carbenet Sauvignon or a blend of both. I have since journeyed on my own and tried a selection of reds. I now know I can never mess with Shiraz but I definitely love Merlot, Carbenet Sauvignon and I have fallen in love with Pinotage and ofcourse Rosé in summer coz I can drink it chilled!

And I believe SA wineries make the BEST wines!! I am definitely not a connesseur but a lover of wine!!

Being a student in Cape Town has exposed me to different ways of enjoying wine; from it being one of the options at a pre-drinks to the first sip of red wine after a long week at school. But I must say that there’s nothing like enjoying a cold bottle of Spier Sauvingon Blanc (or three) while catching up with my girlfriends!

How I enjoy my wine? Is making memories…Red is my favourite. I drink it with whatever, whenever and for all occasions.

I love wine after a long day of madness that monday brings..I like it with a bowl of popcorn on the couch and a binge of my favourite series.

Hmmm. I like my wine on a rainy cold thursday night..where I sit in my bath tub..bathed in rosemary and things to cleanse my weary away.

Oh the friday nights with my sister, how we both enjoy our wine is sitting on a kitchen counter over chats, box of pizza and a big glass of wine we most likely keep sharing, taking turns sipping it until until the bottle is done.

But I also enjoy my wine on a saturday night out with the girls and I accidentally drunk-text my ex(who won’t reply),which later on will make me drown my sorrows in wine :).

My red wine is better on a sanctified sunday afternoon at lunch with friends..a room filled with laughter, food, wine, smiles and good music…where all my friends exude positive aura into the atmosphere.

Wine soothes my soul…life gets a little better with a drop of wine in it. Oh my dear, wine is best shared in everyday life(memories).

You know, after a hectic week on campus grinding, I always look forward to the weekend where my friends and I just unwind over a bottle of wine, or two…I mean, no one is really counting.

Coupled with some good food and music, it always makes for great chill session before we hit the nightlife.

Drinking a glass of wine while eating a slice of cake is always a good time. When there’s no cake, chocolate is always a good substitute

So every once in a while after a break up or a just a really long week, my oldest friend and I would grab a bottle of wine (maybe 2) and play our fave movie to watch together, “He’s just not that into you” and just enjoy the wine and the company. We’ve been doing this for years now 🙂

Chardonnay is how I was introduced to the Wine culture & it’s been a personal favourite in the white wines collection ever since. I enjoy the sweet flavours, and how well balanced they are. However, I’ve learned that this type of wine can’t (or at least shouldn’t) be paired with heavily flavoured dishes. It kills the beauty of the flavours and just ruins the whole experience. I’ve learned to enjoy it with light non-heavily spiced meals that complement its flavour, and just brings everything together. So a simple seafood dish goes a long way with Chardonnay .

After a long week of attending varsity, adulting and trying not to give up on life, I always feel a need to have a glass. I normally enjoy my wine with friends, over good chats and great meals. Be it indoors or outdoors, at a peaceful location.

That first glass always goes in and before you realize it, the bottle is empty. I love my wine, and also love getting to taste different bottles. Also getting to know what meals go with what wine.

I enjoy my wine when I get home to relax after a long day, I love it cold while I’m enjoying a pasta meal. A good glass of wine while I’m with the girls always puts me at ease and makes me happy in that moment, giving wine a lot of credit but a good chardonnay makes me feel like the world isn’t so bad after all.

I associate what I feel in that moment with the glass of wine that I have in that moment. Whether I’m with the girls or by myself, a good glass of wine makes my favorite pasta meals better, helps me relax & has a way of making me feel like the world isn’t such a bad place. a good glass of wine is always a good idea no matter what environment I’m in and that’s why I enjoy it so much.

I enjoy wine especially with my evening meals, they say one glass of wine after a days work is good for the metabolism(LOL).

On special occasions, even though it may not be ideal, we also often find ourselves enjoying bottles of wine the most when all the hard liquor is finished on a Saturday evening(Hides). We sort of saving the best for last, so to speak. Add great company, plenty of LOL’s and snacks and it’s s definite WIN!

I was introduced to Spier by a friend of mine after writing a terrible final exam. He had at least 4 unopened bottles.

By the time it was 6pm we only one left, and I had forgotten about that exam. Sauvignon Blanc has been my favorite from than on.

  26. June 16, 2017 / 1:06 pm

    Hi guys!

Wine is such a luxury, an indulgence I enjoy much too often.
I enjoy my Sauvignon chilled, with friends at a beautiful setting over lunch. I enjoy my Merlot at home, in my quiet moments where I really get to settle down and reconnect.

Wine is a lifestyle. An intimacy. An understanding.. The love a winemaker has is reflected in every sip we’re lucky enough to enjoy..
I’d really appreciate this prize and it will be put to good use trust! Hahaha..

    Hi

Great post… I enjoy my wine when I am done with all my house chores and meal preps for the week, I am a chardonnay lady, and prefer it chilled… I then put on some Toni Braxton and sip away. On cold nights like we recently experiencing, I prefer my shiraz with my oxtail ( which I also cook in a bit of red wine – the cheap kind 😂😂) while I sit infront of my heater and catch up on tv if it is during the weekend or some more work preps before bed. Wine is music to your tongue I always preach…
