The lovely people at Until Until are doing it again, bringing us the final mingle of the year and I am beyond excited. So excited that I am missing all grooves leading up to 26 November 2016 to ensure that I am in tip top shape come Saturday!
Notorious for throwing the most lit parties in Joburg, Until Until, a group of entertainment entrepreneurs have literally brought us the best parties for the past three years. Pyjama Party, Genesis: All Black, High School Cool and most recently Braam Beach Party. I attend quiiite a few parties every week and it’s very easy to grow tired of going to the same places and party with the same people but Until Until keeps us excited with every groove. More than anything their parties are an experience. From the themes, artist line ups, venue and build up, there actually isn’t anyone doing it like them right now.
Out of the above mentioned, Pyjama is definitely a personal favourite. I have been to three of these and have had the time of my life every time alongside my closest friends. The one thing that comes up among me and my friends is “what the hell are we wearing to pyjama?!”. Honestly, half of us either sleep in an ex boyfriend’s tee or naked so it isn’t easy to decide how we want to show up to a pyjama party. Dress up parties aren’t a thing in Joburg because people think they’re too cool to follow themes and dress code but you actually won’t get into the groove if you aren’t in your PJs! Pyjama presents you the opportunity to dress up which is one the very exciting elements of the whole groove.
So for someone who has had their fair share of Until Until Pyjama Parties, here are some tips below on what to wear, how to look cute and ultimately create the most magical moments with you sqwuaaaa:
DARE TO BE DIFFERENT
Sleepwear as outerwear has been a big trend this year, I think I’ve been spotted out once or twice in silk pyjama tops and didn’t bat an eyelid. The trend is cool, comfy and chic so dressing up for Pyjama this year shouldn’t be a difficult task. With most major retailers stocking up their stores with slip dresses in all lengths, silk shirts, shorts and camis in all colours, putting together a groove look will be lots of fun. If you are like me and want to buy something that you will want to wear again, I would suggest purchasing nude, black, white, grey/silver items that can be paired with items that you already own. Local brands like Prime Obsession at Work Shop New Town and Matte Nolim have exquisite pieces that fit perfectly with the pyjama theme but can also be worn at future events and parties.
BE COMFORTABLE
At my first pyjama party I literally wore pyjamas; warm winter fleece pants, a crop top and my polka dot gown. I genuinely thought I was done. Even had my bedtime hair style going on, bantu knots. Wow. What a fail. Not only did I spend most of the night with my heavy gown wrapped around my waist because it got so warm in the venue, but I also regret not undoing my bantu knots and letting my fro be free. Many, many regrets. It is important to be comfortable but it’s also very important to be look swag. Silk shorts and a lace bra or sports bra are a very easy and comfortable option that not only allow you to look cute and sexy but also feel comfortable throughout the night. A second option would be a slip dress, I spotted a nude one at LEGiT and a black velvet one at Factorie for those of you looking ;).
Shoes are always tricky. I would strongly advice that you DO NOT wear slippers or your fury slides. Yes, those would complete your look but lets not forget that this is a party after all. Things get out of hand when ‘Sidlukotini’ comes on and alcohol lands up on our feet so you wouldn’t want to wake up with regrets. I would advise to wear an old pair of kicks or shoes that you don’t mind getting ruined.
SHOW UP
This is Johannesburg. Yes, you will look really cute in your Tiger onesie or your Woolies fleece two piece pyjama but the chances of you being caught on camera by the best in the city are also at an all time high so do you really want to look like your 10 year old baby sister? No. Let’s save those looks for the Christmas slumber party with your family and put together something done for Pyjama, shall we? This is your chance to dress up, mix and match lingerie and over sized shirts, thigh high boots and lace bras. Look sexy but decent. Plan and scheme with your squad, get your face beat, hair laid and show up! I remember spotting a squad of beautiful dolls, matching in their all black silk gowns last year and they looked breathtaking. Make sure you dress and up and show up to give those who don’t make it to the groove the most FOMO via Snapchat and the gram.
